Layer Cake Compost Heap

Another Layer Cake Compost Heap

I don’t know quite why, but I’ve felt really tired all day. So dropped around to the plot after lunch but didn’t stay too long.

I took down some used growbags and compost in pots – all helps to improve the soil. Much as I joke about Val’s flowers, they do make good compost material!

Next I rebuilt the compost heap on plot 5. This involved emptying the bins and refilling with comfrey layered every six inches or so.

I’ve now cut most of the comfrey apart from about 4 plants, which will go on the heap with some more green material later.

Pumpkins

The pumpkins had been hidden on plot 5 behind the brassica bed and covered with thick green netting as camouflage. Now they are safely home, having travelled in style on the back seat of the car. Nearly killed me getting them moved.. must grow smaller pumpkins next year.

Potato Sorting

Back at the ranch, Val had more potatoes drying off on old shower curtains laid on the lawn. These were sorted into sacks (use first sack and will store longest, perfect potato sacks) The shed is pretty full of potatoes so no shortage forseen there.

Tomatoes

Another six pounds or so of tomatoes, skinned, part cooked and to the freezer.
