Envii, market leaders in biological and organic products for gardeners and horticulturalists have just released Root Well, an innovative biological product that combines mycorrhizal fungi inoculant with bacteria to supercharge root growth, plant development and improve resilience and disease resistance.

Mycorrhizal Fungi
When I first heard about mycorrhizal fungi being used to help with plant growth I was quite sceptical. We’ve all seen wonder additives and fertilisers that failed to live up to the promises. Regardless, the RHS were saying positive things and that convinced me to try it out for myself when I planted some blackcurrant bushes. The results were faster and stronger growth which proved to me that mycorrhizal inoculants worked.
They really came to the fore about 12 years ago and I assumed they were a fairly recent discovery, so I was surprised to find Sir Albert Howard (developer of Indore compost) was expounding the benefits of mycorrhizal fungi in farming back in 1940. A man ahead of his time.
Mycorrhizal fungi work with the plant roots. They unlock nutrients tied up in the soil and make them available to the roots. In return the plants supply the fungi with nutrients. A bit like a barter system with the fungi supplying raw materials and being paid in food.
Soil Bacteria
We’re learning what a complex ecosystem our soil harbours. Bacteria play a large part, interacting directly with plants and with mycorrhizal fungi in the soil to the benefit of all. Just like our gut bacteria are important to our health, a range of bacteria help the soil community.
Nitrogen fixing bacteria in root nodules on legumes have been known about for many years but in recent years researchers have realised the importance of many soil bacteria in plant development and growth. These bacteria feed off all the vitamins, organic acids & carbohydrates that plants provide naturally. This boosts the bacterial activity making nutrients like phosphorus and nitrogen ready and accessible for plants to absorb straight away. Also, the use of bacteria will help protect plants from pathogens & diseases.
Combining Mycorrhizal Fungi & Bacteria
Mycorrhizal fungi and bacteria working together really helps increase the nutrient & moisture uptake via plants roots. By creating a further extension to the root system, this helps unlock nitrogen and phosphorus in the soil which is largely beneficial for many reasons. Phosphorus is hard to come by in natural soils so the use of mycorrhizal is very helpful in gathering this element. In return the fungi are provided with sugars and nutrients from the plants as mentioned above
It’s been found that some bacteria help to promote the mycorrhizal establishment within plants whilst mycorrhizal can increase the size of the bacterial population. This highlights how well both work in conjunction with one another. A virtuous circle of symbiosis for the benefit of all.
Envii Root Well
Envii, who have developed a range of biological organic aids for gardeners and the horticultural industry have developed a new product called Root Well. It’s been designed specifically to support plant health & root development.
Root Well is an organic blend of mycorrhizal fungi and bacteria that helps increase the nutrient & moisture uptake via plants roots. By creating a further extension to the root system, this helps unlock nitrogen and phosphorus in the soil which is largely beneficial for many reasons. Phosphorus is hard to come by in natural soils so the use of mycorrhizal is crucial in gathering this element. Root Well takes mycorrhizal inoculants to the next level.
Being a biological aid rather than a chemical aid, only a tiny amount is needed to per plant. Because of this a highly concentrated 80 gram packet is enough for 80 plants. Because it enables the plants to unlock nitrogen and phosphorus from the soil, it reduces or eliminates the need for fertilisers.
It can be used along with fertilisers although it isn’t recommended to use fertilisers high in phosphorus (The ‘P’ in NPK). Root Well can also be used on ericaceous plants. The bacteria will still break down nutrients for plants despite the low pH.
Another benefit from using Envii Root Well is that by increasing the uptake of nutrients & water through plants roots it helps protect against harmful pathogens and diseases. The ability to take up more water should assist the plants in times of very hot weather and drought.
Envii Root Well Safety
It is safe for all pets, children, and wildlife. There is no need to exclude them after applications.
How to Use Envii Root Well
- Evenly sprinkle the required amount around the base of the plant or seedling
- Water into the soil lightly, avoiding overwatering.
- For further development, apply two additional applications at 3-week intervals.
Unused Root Well will keep for up to 12 months from opening the packet
What to use Envii Root Well on?
I’ve been thinking about the best uses for Root Well. It would be particularly beneficial for for house plants. Houses aren’t the best environment for plants and a strong root system strengthens the plant. Outside Root Well will help perennials establish producing strong plants in the flower garden.
In the vegetable plot I’d use Root Well on plants where a good root system is critical. Plants that are in the ground for a long time. The leafy brassicas like cabbage, cauliflower, headed broccoli etc. I always start these under cover and then transplant to 4” pots to grow on – the perfect time to add Root Well, followed by an application on transplanting.
The same applies to squashes, marrows, courgettes and cucumbers. All plants who really need a good root system to give of their best. Envii already have a similar specialist product specifically produced for tomatoes – Maximato Extra
