A Tour Around a Prize Winning Vegetable Grower’s Garden

Growing the proper way!

In my capacity as secretary of the Crewe & Nantwich District Association of the National Vegetable Society (boy that sounds pompous!) I went across to see John Carver, who is our chairman and a qualified show judge.

He kindly showed me around his back garden. Past a large heated greenhouse where his wife keeps flowery things to the large polytunnel with it’s built up beds, watering and climate control through to the double glazed, underfloor heated, additionally lighted greenhouse where the young leeks were being potted on!

Serious growing indeed.

He gave me a seed head with little bulblets in them, which I’ll plant up tomorrow. Lacking the same level of sophisticated facility, they’ll have to make do with a bedroom!

Hope the weather lets me onto the plot soon – I’m told there has been another delivery of leaves and I’ve loads to move and do,
