Well the hosepipe ban is over. Those of us in the North West can go berserk with our hosepipes again. (Official, Thursday 19th October – United Utilities)
They state:
The ban was imposed on July 9 after the driest December to June spell to hit the region in more than 70 years. Significant rainfall from mid July to mid August has allowed us to announce an end to the ban – despite Pennine reservoir levels remaining below average for the time of year.
They also say:
“We’d like to thank customers for bearing with us since July 9. Although the ban is over, some of our reservoirs are still very low, so it’s important that people continue to do what they can to save water around the home and garden. Being water wise also helps protect the environment, whatever the weather.”
It’s really funny in a way. Almost to the day they instituted the ban, the rain has hardly stopped and even the die-hard watering fanatics don’t stand there sprinkling their plot in the rain.
The only nuisance for me has been in the greenhouse. Rather than use the hosepipe, I’ve dutifully filled the watering cans at the tap and walked a huge 5 yards to pour it on the plants. So overall, pretty much a non-event.
