Tomatoes Killed in Overheated Propagator

Greenhouse Disaster

Since it’s pouring with rain no plot visit today but I checked in the greenhouse. I’ve two electric propagators in there – just cheap ones without thermostatic control so you need to keep an eye on them. Turn them off when it’s warm and open the vents etc.

So, thought I’d check things out at lunchtime and discovered all but one of the seedlings had expired in one of the propagators. Just one Plum Roma had survived and all the cayenne peppers were dead.

I worked out what happened. The last few sharp frosts obliged me to put the paraffin heater on to keep the house above freezing and this propagator was above the heater. The surviving seedling was furthest from the heat source. I cooked them.

The other propagator is fine, all is doing well, thank goodness.

Some of the onion seedlings in modules needed watering but all else was OK. Re-sowed some Plum Roma and cayenne peppers. They should catch up although it’s a bit cross making. Such is gardening.
