Transplanting Onions and Sowing Leeks

Transplanting Onions

I sowed Ailsa Craig, Red Baron and Bedforshire Champion back in February. The Bedfordshire Champion were a failure, about three weak specimens. I don’t know why but I haven’t had any luck with Johnson’s seeds.

The Ailsa Craig were doing really well and the Red Baron were OK if nothing much to write home about.  I carefully lifted them from the seed tray with the aid of my trusty spoon – I only use the finest of tools! Moved into modules, 15 to a seed tray where they will stay until they are transplanted. I’ll start to harden them off in a week or so.

Ended up with 30 Red Baron and 79 Ailsa Craig. That’s not really enough onions to keep us going but I also have the sets I planted last week so hopefully we will have enough to see us through.

I’m forgetting the 30 small (by his standards) onions John Carver gave me that are thriving in modules and the 16 large onions in 3" post – photo below. John Carver is the chairman of of our local branch of the NVS and he gave me these onions when I attended the open evening at his house. I think they were a bit shocked by the move from their temperature controlled, doubled glazed and grow-light lit home to my humble greenhouse. They seem to have got over the shock and be doing OK though.

Sowing Leeks

I also sowed some leeks. I’d got a packet of Musselburgh and of Autumn Mammoth Verina so they have been sown thinly into large pots, which are now in the coldframe. The Verina are supposed to be rust resistant and Musselbugh tend to hold well.

I don’t see why not – when you plant them out just give the soil some fertilizer – fish blood and bone would be fine – first to help them on.

All I need to know is how to plant leeks ! I have some seedlings that I have bought from the garden centre. How do I plant them in my allotment ie. distance apart, depth etc.

    Thank you.

PS Is there a simle site that gives you the basics of planting vegetable seedlings ?

  4. John says:

Well Annabel, you could ask on the forums, invest in my book or Hessayon’s Vegetable & Herb expert or even google.
