Giant Winter Leek is a late-season variety of leek characterised by its heavy and thick stems. It typically matures from January onwards and maintains its standing in the ground for an extended period.
Belonging to the Allium family, leeks feature a small, flat bulb and long, broad leaves that transition from white to dark green. These leaves tightly envelop to create a tall, cylindrical shape, resembling a stem, although it’s technically not one. The flavor profile of these leeks is reminiscent of onions but possesses its own distinct taste.
To cultivate Giant Winter leeks, sow the seeds indoors in early spring or in a cold frame outdoors during late spring. Alternatively, you can sow them directly in a well-prepared seed bed or containers indoors. Plant the seeds thinly, around 1cm deep, in drills spaced 23cm apart.
When the seedlings are ready, typically in early summer, transplant them carefully into the garden. Space them 15×40 cm apart, making holes about 15cm deep. Insert the seedlings into the holes up to the level of their first leaf, and then fill the holes with water, not soil. As the leeks grow, earth up the stems to encourage healthy development.
Expect to harvest your Giant Winter leeks from November through February.
