How to Get the Most Out of Your Garden

There is nothing quite like gardening if you are looking for a rewarding hobby. In fact, getting out in the fresh air is also a fantastic form of therapy in today’s busy, hi-tech world. Why not create a garden space where you can not only grow amazing plants but can also enjoy sunny days in a peaceful environment? Whether you are new to gardening or have been at it for years, here are a few ideas to explore.

One of the best tips from consummate gardeners is to take the winter months to consider just what it is you’d like to do with your garden. Are you looking to grow some of your own fruits and vegetables? Perhaps you are thinking of combining a quiet place to enjoy the outdoors with that garden you’ve always dreamed of planting. Seasoned gardeners suggest you spend some time during the winter months to plan out exactly what you want to do with the space you have.

They suggest you draw out a plan so that you will know where everything goes when spring arrives and it’s time to get started. Are you thinking of combining a garden with a place for enjoyment and/or entertaining? If so, you may also want to consider ordering garden furniture early so that it arrives in time to set it up as soon as you’ve created your space. From outdoor tables to comfortable outdoor sofas, there are plenty of options to work into your recreational space.

Learn the Benefits of Companion Gardening

You will obviously want to know a bit about how to actually work with the plants you intend to grow. Each and every plant requires a specific environment in order to thrive, so you will want to learn all you can about spacing, the amount of sun each plant requires and even the best time of year to plant your seeds or bulbs. Such things as fertilizer, pesticides and watering are also specific to each type of plant, so take the time to learn about those as well.

However, did you know that companion gardening can give you benefits in each of those areas? For example, did you know that peppermint deters insects that would decimate your crops? Not only will this amazingly aromatic member of the mint family help keep aphids and other plant-eating bugs at bay, but it can be used to make teas and summertime beverages as well. Some plants give off nutrients others need to thrive, so learn to plant them in close proximity to each other and you may not even need to fertilize often, if at all!

Reserve Time to Enjoy the Fruits of Your Labour

When all is said and done, you’ve worked long and hard to create a garden for enjoyment as well as utility. Don’t forget to take the time to enjoy that garden as often as possible. Enjoy a fresh salad from your garden on that outdoor dining set you’ve ordered or simply sit on that garden bench to enjoy a moment of meditative relaxation. Get the most out of your garden because that’s what it’s there for!
