Garlic Chives, also known as Chinese Chives, offer a mild, sweet garlic flavor, distinguishing them from traditional chives.

Garlic Chives stand apart from their onion chive counterparts not only in appearance but also in flavor. While onion chive leaves are hollow, garlic chive leaves are flat. Their attractive star-shaped flowers make them a versatile addition to beds and borders, and they can also be dried for use in flower arrangements.

Garlic Chives are prized for their ability to enhance a variety of dishes, including salads, soups, stir-fries, grilled meats, herbal vinegars, and butters. All parts of the plant, including the leaves, stems, and flowers, are edible. It’s worth noting that while the leaves, stems, and flowers are edible, the bulbs are not suitable for consumption, unlike regular garlic.

Garlic chives are relatively simple to grow from seed. You can begin cultivating these hardy perennial plants by sowing the seeds indoors as early as March or April, with the intention of transplanting them outside at the end of May or once the threat of frost has subsided. To start, lightly scatter the seeds onto a tray or pot filled with damp compost, covering them with about 1cm of finely sifted compost. Alternatively, you can sow the seeds directly outdoors from April to June, planting them in drills and spacing them out to 20cm-30cm apart once they’ve sprouted.
