Farewell Lotty Cat

After sixteen years we lost Lotty Cat on Tuesday, 7th April 2026. Cara was present when she was born, helping her Mum, Evie. Lotty wasn’t breathing, but the vet guided Cara on speakerphone and saved her. Cara posted updates on the forum as things happened, so calling her Lotty was pretty obvious.

Lotty Cat in April 2010

Lotty came here with us and quickly settled in to rural life as chief rodent control operative. She actually caught four rabbits in one day! Eventually she retired and enjoyed a more laid back lifestyle.

Her health wasn’t great for the last months but following blood tests which showed a thyroid problem, she responded well to treatment and seemed to regain her condition. Over the Easter holiday she became unwell, by Easter Monday it was pretty obviously serious. The vet felt something more was going on than the thyroid problem, most likely a tumour, and that there was no hope for recovery.

She’s buried with our other cats, under the trees by the vegetable area. You always hope for more time, I really thought she’d enjoy this summer, but there are no certainties to life.

A Few Tasks

I didn’t feel like doing much over the weekend apart from making Lotty comfortable. Did manage a few tasks though.

Planted out the second tranche of broad beans, started off in rootrainers. The parsnips in their paper pots also planted out.

Tomatoes in Vitopod

All the tomatoes have been pricked out into individual 10cm pots. I’m keeping them in the Vitopod at 20ºC along with the chilli peppers. I’ll start hardening them off a little soon with a view to setting them out in the greenhouses.

Setting up the new greenhouse.

Brought the final wheelbarrow of soil down to the greenhouse border. My back is much improved but moving just half a wheelbarrow load requires care. Still able to move, so I did something right.

Having run the power cable through, time to set up the heated base propagator. I’ve had it since 2008, but the knob has been knocked off the thermostat by the storm that took out the old greenhouse. I should be able to buy a new thermostat and get it running again, silly thing to be sad about, but that’s me!

Still lots to do, second week of April and things ain’t going to plan. But, then again, when do they ever go to plan?

So sorry to hear about Lotty Cat.
I never knew it was possible to love an animal so much as we do our Tuppence (nearly 5yr old) ‘Kitten’. A very affectionate cat but a fierce fighter and rodent killer.
I know we (especially my husband) will be devastated when he dies – hopefully not for many years yet.

  13. Pamela Gooderham says:

So so sorry to hear about Lotty Cat. Our beloved Squish died on Easter Monday at the age of 17. We’ve buried her in the garden and I’m wondering what would be an appropriate plant to place on her grave. It will need to flower in early April as she died on 6th April. They are such sweet companions

    • John Harrison says:

Sorry about Squish, it’s tough, I know. I’ve seen cats stop to smell the flowers, so appropriate. Depends where you are but primroses or daffodils might be nice. How about forget-me-nots?

      • Greg Watt says:

Very sorry John to read about the passing of your beloved Lotty! They are part of the family, we lost our dear Cassie over 2 years ago and I still miss her! best wishes!

So sorry to hear about your beloved Lottie – she sounded quite a character! It’s devastating when they pass away but you have many years of beautiful memories of her. As a volunteer with the Cats Protection, sadly I deal with many cats that aren’t as fortunate as your Lottie. She was blessed to have a loving owner and family. Take care.

    • John Harrison says:

Thanks Lisa. All our cats over the years have either been rescues or strays who just moved in. Cara volunteered with Cats Protection, it’s emotionally tough but rewarding.
