More Potting, Cauliflowers, Firewood and Dead Hedging

The weather seems to be offering two options, bright and freezing or warm and wet. Wind optional! Never mind, managing to get a bit done out there.

Brassicas

Potted up the Doric sprouts and cauliflower All Year Round into the same mix I used for the Greyhound cabbages. Just half a dozen of each, which will be more than enough for this sowing. Both are on the heated trays in the small greenhouse which click on at 8ºC.

The Doric are looking good but the cauliflower seedlings, not so much. I’ll see how they do but if they don’t perk up, they’ll be moving to the compost bin.

Having thought about it, decided to go mad and buy some more cauliflower seeds. First of all, Graffiti F1. It’s unusual, being a purple variety. I’ve grown them in the past, and they’ve got the F1 hybrid vigour, producing decent-sized, firm heads. I doubt my grandson will believe they’re space cauliflowers, nowadays. He’s growing up so fast.

I’ve also got some Barcelona F1 coming. I’ve not grown these before, but they’re well-spoken of. With a bit of luck, I’ll be harvesting one in June.

Seedlings in Greenhouse

Seedlings in Greenhouse – It’s getting a bit full in there!

Lettuce

It seems my Webbs Wonderful and All Year Round seeds are no longer viable. The Lolla Rossa and Marvel of Four Seasons are showing, so not a total loss from the first sowing. I’ll sow some Little Gem next, which should be harvesting late May. Useful trick – pull up with the roots and put into a vase. They’ll keep well, that way.

All goes to prove that growing plans are great, until reality intervenes!

Firewood and Dead Hedge

Firewood and Dead Hedge

Firewood with dead hedge behind.

Made a start sorting out the wood piled near the small greenhouse. It really should have been done last year, but better late than never. There’s still a goodly amount to do, but the bulk of the brash has been built into a dead hedge and the wood large enough to become firewood pulled together. That’s a job for the chain saw, on another day.

Over on the other side, by the walled vegetable plot, there’s another load of brash, so I’ll create another dead hedge there. This will also act as a windbreak / frost shield for the vegetable area.

Spring is Near!

The weather is not exactly spring-like, but nature says differently. The daffodils are starting to bloom and the primrose flowers adding colour to the borders. Won’t be long, now.
