Storm Chandra Kills Greenhouse

I hardly slept last night. Storm Chandra was howling round the house and things were crashing and banging outside. Even the cats were worried and decided to cuddle up to me in bed. Their safe space!

Storm Damaged Greenhouse

Doors ripped off greenhouse

From my bedroom window, I could see some quite large decorative plant pots were rolling around on the patio outside. The Eden greenhouse to the side of the house was fine and behind it, the large shed’s roof still intact.

Then to the south side of the house. Some plastic chairs that I’d stacked and laid down to protect them had blown around. But they were sitting on broken glass. Knowing Chandra was coming, I’d checked the greenhouse over. Glass all firmly in place, capping in position. Nuts and bolts all tight. Doors closed, locked together with a large clip and firmly against the frame. Two sandbags in front to stop any chance of them moving. In theory.

Greenhouse Frame

Greenhouse Frame and Base Rail Damaged

The wind had ripped both doors off the front, and the panes to the right of the doors were gone. The upright had torn out of the base rail. Not a loose bolt, the rail’s metal was ripped open. Struts bent and twisted. The main frame is out of true now. At the back of the greenhouse, a large pane of glass was shattered.

I really don’t think it can be repaired this time.

Taken everything loose out of the greenhouse and put the things into the shed, swept up a lot of the glass, but we’ll be finding bits for months.

My greenhouse suffered too. We got an Outsunny and it has proved to be a bit light. Last year, the doors blew off and panels ended up over the fance at the back of my garden. We changed the double plastic for heavy duty plexiglass. Candra very kindly blew out 4 panels. I give up.

Hi, talking of Greenhouses I have a Polycarbonate Greenhouse and once it was all built, all that was left to do was secure the Poly Panels. I decided to leave that for the next day (bad decision) but the trouble was the Wind and Rain stopped me from doing that, I ended up with some of the Roof, side panels, and back panels blowing off, and lucky for me they either ended up in next doors garden or all over my garden.
Once the Winds were over and done with, I started to secure the panels with Silicone at the top and bottom and small Screws, that came with the Greenhouse along the sides of each panel. Since we have had endless Storms and also strong Winds, i’m happy to say everything has stayed in place.

I too have a polycarbonate greenhouse and it usually loses 1 roof panel and the auto window every year, last winter after a storm the usual two were out but there was no sign of the roof panel even with the help of a friend and his drone we couldn’t find it so replaced it and hubby suggested using some sort of gorilla glue on them. What a mistake that was, the last storm that came through last November I think, blew an end panel and ripped the window complete with frame from its fittings wrecking it in the process. That blew over the wall into the lane and was retrieved.
We didn’t get it so bad this time but then the greenhouse hasn’t had a new window in yet so just blew through. Still undecided whether to buy a new one or fix this one.
