Corn in Africa

As I write this, the temperature outside is below freezing. The frost is crisp on the ground, the sky is grey, and it’s not exactly welcoming. So I thought I’d share this photo with you that popped into my inbox a bit before Christmas. A beautiful pastoral scene to say goodbye to 2025 with.

It was sent by newsletter subscriber Ndanduleni Manwadu, who I believe is in Southern Africa, although I’m not certain. I did ask for more information, but maybe she didn’t get the email. The only message with the photo was, ‘We are busy with weed.’

It certainly looks like she’s got her work cut out, judging by the size of the field.

I’m loath to comment too much on growing in a climate that I’ve zero experience of, working a soil that I’ve not had in my hands. But, from the photo, it looks very fertile. Certainly the corn and weeds all look healthy! As do the trees and fields in the background.

Happy New Year!
