National Vegetable Society Meeting

National Vegetable Society

We had a really interesting talk at last nights meeting of the National Vegetable Society from Mr John Bebbington whose polytunnel has been on here before. He showed photographs of his allotment plot and garden as well as his prize winning onions and potatoes.  He also had a number of shots of various vegetable shows.

Personally, I have some issues with growing potatoes in peat held in plastic bags.  Although I think the organic associations make too much about people using peat in the garden when it is still burnt in houses and power stations in Eire.

In any event, John reuses the peat for hanging baskets etc after his potatoes are grown.

One point that I think needs making about show vegetables – yes they are edible. John’s wife was at the meeting and made the point that everything they grow, including 20″ onions, ends up being eaten after the show.

I didn’t get down to the plot today, despite it being a beautiful day, as I was visiting.
