Sowing Tomatoes
I know you can, in theory, sow tomatoes etc. in January but I feel they suffer from the lack of light. The only place we can provide the right conditions for germination is in the electric propogator in the front bedroom. This is north facing so the light is never brilliant.
Anyway, nearly at the end of February, winter arrives late – although we have hardly seen a snowflake – but it is cold and damp enough to keep me off the plot.
For the greenhouse I have sown:
- Aubergine (Black Beauty)
- Chilli Peppers
- Sweet Peppers
- Tomato (Sungold)
- Tomato (Moneymaker)
In a couple of weeks I will sow some tomato, Gardeners Delight, which I hope will succeed outside on the plot. Outdoor toms are always risky in our climate but I think we may have a good summer after last years awful offering.
The Red Baron onions are popping up in the greenhouse. Germination doesn’t seem too bad although there are a couple of blank modules.
Hopefully we will have a few nice days soon so I can sow the broad beans and prepare for the early peas by putting up a cloche to warm the ground.
