Harvesting Potatoes and Watering Potatoes

Potatoes and Water

They say, ‘we don’t have a climate in Britain, just weather’. Well, they’re right. After the heatwave, today was positively cold. Flannel shirt and bodywarmer, then to the plot.

Watered the potatoes on plot 29 and set the sprinkler going at the top end of plot 5 as I dug up a row of potatoes.

The soil is pretty solid but with some grunting managed to get the fork in and the spuds up. Divided the potatoes into 3 piles.

  • Perfect, for use later

  • Blemished, a small hole or forked

  • Eaten to death by the slugs, which were put on the compost heap.

I even found ants nesting in some potatoes! I reckon around 10KG of usable, 5KG of perfect and 4KG back to the heap from a 15 foot row – and yes, I’m not consistent in measurements.
