We’re counting down to the National Vegetable Society AGM and show. It’s next Saturday, in Llangollen which is about an hour’s drive for us. This year sees the current chairman, Medwyn Williams, step down after 13 years. Medwyn has done a good job for the society but now feels it is time for someone else to take the reins. I think (as does Medywn) it will be good for the society to have someone fresh at the top now.
There are two candidates for the position, Denis Barry who is currently treasurer and Barry Newman who is currently chairman of the Southern Branch. Both of them have the interests of the society at heart, but they have very different views of how the society should progress.
My feeling is that Denis is influenced by his position of treasurer and will conserve the society’s resources as his priority. Whereas Barry seems more progressive and committed to expanding and developing the society.
Barry is up against the odds, standing against a Welsh candidate in an election voted on by members present at the AGM which is being held in Wales. Hopefully members will vote on the basis of who they think will be the best person for the society rather than branch allegiances.
I’ve decided to vote for Barry as I think he’ll drive through changes that the society needs if it is to carry on for another 50 years. I just hope Denis won’t take it personally. Whoever gets in can count on my full support. They’re both nice guys, committed to the cause.
If you’re a member of the NVS, please try and attend the AGM. It’s critical to the society that the members participate. If not a member, then why not drop over and enjoy a great day out in a wonderful bit of Wales. There will be some fantastic vegetables on show and trade stands, a school garden competition, a farmer’s market and other events. Megan’s kitchen will be providing refreshments at reasonable prices.
It’s open from 10am to 4.30pm, £3.00 for adults, children under 14 free and free parking. The show is open all over the bank holiday weekend – Saturday 27, Sunday 28 and Monday 29 August. Llangollen is an ideal starting point for visiting many of the scenic attractions to be found in North Wales
