Vegetable Seeds - Tomatoes

Growing tomatoes, especially in the English summer, is not always an easy task!

But the flavour of home grown tomatoes is unbeatable, no shop bought tomato can ever compete with a thin skinned variety picked fresh and sun warm from the vine.

For advice on growing tomatoes see our How to Grow Your Own Tomatoes guide and the various articles that cover growing tomatoes in depth.

Tomatillo Seeds - Purple

Tomatillos are related to tomatoes, but are easier to grow, no staking or nipping out needed. Once the plants get to 30cm (12) tall, they will flop over and touch the floor, producing more branches and more fruit. Dont try and control them, they wont produce as much. They produce a profusion of fruit enclosed in paper husks. Slightly sticky to the touch, the fruit have a tomato and lime taste, perfect in fajitas. Try adding to salads for a zesty kick, they also make fantastic salsa and can be fried too. Sow the seeds in shallow trays of compost in a propagator or on a sunny windowsill in March, transfer them into their final growing positions outdoors in late May/June when frost danger has passed. Harvest August-October.

Tomato Seeds - Red Currant

Rob says: Solanum pimpernelifolium produces tiny fruits, hence the name. Its a different species from your common garden tomato and its hardly changed since it was found growing wild on a Peruvian beach in 1707. The plants are very disease resistant, and can tolerate cooler temperatures. Each tiny tomato is crisp, and has a really intense, sweet/tart flavour. Good in salads, or straight from the plant. These tomatoes will reward you with fruit every day.Grow them as you would any cordon tomato and pinch out the side shoots (you can leave a few side shoots if you forget). They may be confused as they were found growing on a beach on the floor, but that's because they were wild. To get the best from the plants when they are trained up a cane, they will grow to around 1.5-2m in a greenhouse.

The plants are very productive, producing large, cherry-sized fruit which are deep red in colour, with green striping which fades as the fruit ripens. Tomato Veranda Red F1 The dwarf tomato with big flavour! British bred, the?Veranda Red has taken 15 years to perfect. Bred by the breeder of the Tumbler, it is extremely versatile. The?Veranda Red shows good resistance to Fusarium, Verticillium and some blight. Allowing anyone to grow this dwarf tomato with big flavour! Compared to other dwarf tomato varieties, the Veranda Red has the most delicately sweet flavour, just like a vine tomato you would grow in a greenhouse. Therefore, it comes to no surprise that this variety was loved by Carol Klein at RHS Hampton Court Flower Show 2019! Early ripening from mid- July this tomato plant will produce up to 75 juicy, 12-16g fruit. Ideal for small pots, baskets or any containers.

From Suttons Price: £4.49

Tomato Seeds - Veranda Red F1

A fantastic tomato variety! Ideal for patios and balconiesBritish bred, taking 15 years breeding to perfect, this is an incredibly productive little plant (up to 75 fruit per plant). Bred by the man who created 'Red Alert' and 'Tumbler'. Very early (mid-July) ripening. Sweet, cherry-sized fruits that were very popular in taste tests. Some blight resistance and resistance to fusarium and verticillium. 12?16g fruit. Loved by Carol Klein at RHS Hampton Court Flower Show 2019. Finally a great tasting, compact, bush tomato with flavour! Ideal for patios, balconies and anywhere else too small for a regular tomato. Can even be grown in pots as small as 11cm wide. No staking or support required, just water and harvest. Good resistance to Fusarium, Verticillium and some resistance to late blight. Bush Variety. Harvest mid-July?October. Height 21?30cm (8?12); spread 31?40cm (12?16).Tomato CareOnce flowers begin to appear, the plants should be fed with a liquid tomato fertiliser at the recommended rate weekly. The growing point should be removed when five or six trusses have formed, as this will encourage the fruits to swell more rapidly and mature more quickly.Keep the plants well-watered, especially when the fruits have started to set. Wide fluctuations in moisture supply may lead to irregular fruit growth, cracking of the skin, and dropping of the fruits.Veranda Red is special because dwarf tomatoes are notoriously lacking in flavour and not that nice tasting, whereas Veranda Red has the flavour of a vine tomato you would grow in your greenhouse, BUT on a small plant. It's taken 15 years to breed the improved flavour into this small size and it's from the breeder of Tumbler, Honeycomb and the Crimson family (hence why it's also late blight resistant). I personally think it's a cracking new variety and Nick has been working with Simon and growing it for the last year or two as well.Basically it's all about bringing the flavour of greenhouse cordon tomatoes into a small, easy to care for plant without the hassle of training the plant or needing a greenhouse.
