Vegetable Seeds - Squash

There are so many squash varieties, some grow to the size of a small pumpkin and some are the size of cricket balls. Squash need a good summer to fruit well. Some of the new varieties have been bred for the British climate, so may be more successful than the old favourites.

Bushy. An outstanding early British-bred Butternut squash. In T&M's trials Harrier F1 was the quickest to ripen, and was ready to harvest approximately 95 days from sowing. Bushy plants have an open habit allowing the sun to ripen fruits naturally on the plant giving added sweetness.

A famous French heirloom whose name derives from potiron (pumpkin) and marron (chestnut). One of the very best for baking and roasting, fruits reach 1.25-1.75 kilos (3-4lbs) in weight with an aromatic chestnut like taste.

A traditional variety from southern France, these gorgeous, big flat pumpkins are shaped like a big wheel of cheese, and are heavily lobed and ribbed. The skin is a beautiful, rich brown colour when ripe. The flesh is deep orange, thick and very fine flavoured, fruit grow to 20 lb each.

Winter Squash : Autumn Crown

New from British breeding, an easy-to-grow, early-maturing variety, well suited to our summers. The flattened round-shaped fruits combine the attractive skin colour of a Butternut with the shape of Crown Prince. An average of 5 fruits per plant, each weighing 1.5kgs (approx 3lbs) develop on semi trailing vines. Fruits have a rich orange flesh with a 'melon aroma', and a small seed cavity. Stores well.

Zucca da Marmellata

Part of the James Wong Grow For Flavour Range. Bred specifically to simmer down into a spiced amber jam much loved in Italy. It is rather lacking in sugars, so tastes a little insipid on its own, but it is magically transformed by a few generous cupfuls of the sweet stuff, a sprinkling of lemon rind and a dash of cinnamon. Harvest August-November.
